We are big (beer) drinkers here at the whatsgood. office, which is easy when considering the Netherlands has a massive number of breweries for such a small country. In fact, the Netherlands has overtaken Belgium in the number of brewers and “beer companies” last year. Most of these companies and breweries are located in the Noord-Holland province, which Amsterdam (and our office) is located in. Lucky for us!
While this does mean that we now have a lot of delicious beers to choose from it also means that we suffer from hangovers a lot more often. We are not advocates of getting completely wasted, and who would be an advocate of such self-torture. It’s just that as we got older, even 4 or 5 beers during a night at a bar with friends can lead to a bit of a hangover the next morning. (Worth noting that we mean real beers with 6% ABV and more)
Fortunately, the cause of the problem is also now the solution. One of our favorite breweries located in the heart of Amsterdam, Brouwerij De Prael, has created a hangover-free beer.
The pilsner-style beer is 4.5% percent alcohol which a few extra ingredients to make for a lighter hangover the next day. Brewer Thomas Gesink researched how to create beer after being challenged to the task and found that vitamin B12 along with willow fibers for a cleansing effect, ginger, and sea salts to keep the body from dehydrating resulted in somewhat surprisingly delicious beer that still leaves you fresh in the morning.
With a promise like that the beer is likely to sell out fast at De Prael brewery where it is only available on draft.
