Quality hip hop beat-makers are scarce as of lately, and Evil Needle is the answer to this vacuum - he even named his last release Reminisce (which takes you back to when hip hop beats were big). Soulful, laid back, and downtempo. Don't let this fool you though. Every once in a while he catches you off-guard with an up-tempo track, which just reminds you everything that he's capable of. There's actually not much else to say than that we, at whatsgood., have been massive fans for a while now. He was nice enough to take the time out for an interview with us:
Explain your sound to us? How would you describe it?
My sound is pretty much a blend of different influences that piled up over the years. Boom-bap, Hip-hop, Neo-Soul, Trap, Future-beats and what not. A lot of people ask me what genre my music is and to me personally, it's still just Hip-Hop (with a twist).
Where does the name come from?
My stage name is pretty random actually. Back in the days I bought a scratch vinyl that had tons of skits, phrases and vintage ads on it. I found one section where some guy talked about the fact that drugs are very bad for your health. He said that you shouldn't mess around with 'the evil needle' which is actually heroin. Don't know why, but I liked the sound of it and used it as a stage name. I got used to it over the years and never changed it.
What’s the one thing you absolutely love about the music-scene at the moment? That reminds you every time why you chose this profession?
I love the fact that the 'future' scene is blowing up right now. I'm always proud when one of the Soundcloud fam gets a big placement or something similar.
Keeps me motivated.
What’s the one thing you’re cringing about at the moment, when it comes to the music-scene? Something that (almost) makes you want to stop?
There isn't really a thing that would have me quit making music, but more generally, I find artists that 'clone' other artist's styles pretty annoying.
But at the end of the day, this isn't something new and it's happening everywhere, not only in the music industry.
Which of your own productions are your favorite? (and why?)
(One of) My favorite track would be 'So Fly'. It's not the most technical or the craziest track I've done but I have a lot of memories attached to it. A lot of things were happening in my life around the time that I composed it, and I always feel nostalgic when I hear it.
Which artist right now is the one you’re most excited about, that you feel everyone should know about?
My absolute favourite artists right now has to be Mozaic. He got that good ol' Dilla vibe going on. Always relaxing to listen to his songs.
If you could collaborate with anyone world-wide (and resources weren’t an issue), who would it be and why?
What can we expect from you in 2016?
I'm working on a new LP right now and will be doing my very fist US tour.
