It's December. Next to buying presents, decorating Christmas trees, eating and drinking way too much and hanging out with relatives you don't particularly like, this also means it's time for end-of-the-year-lists! We at whatsgood. don't want to fall behind and we like having heated debates about this shit so we present our "whatsgood. top 16 of '16" list. The idea is very simple: our 16 favorite music releases of 2016. These can be either EP's or full-length albums.
Here's our no. 12 - 9 (check out no. 16 - 13 here):
12. De La Soul - and the Anonymous Nobody
After 12 years of silence, legendary hip hop group De La Soul finally released a new album. They financed the entire project through Kickstarter (see campaign here). With the money raised, they rented their own studio space, recorded their own sounds with brass bands, etc. It’s a big step in hip hop, to be able to finance the production and distribution of an entire studio album through crowdfunding. So, beyond the 12 years of silence, the album also marks the introduction of crowdfunding. De La Soul continue to push the boundaries until today. So give it a listen and enjoy the smooth vibes, live instruments, knowledge-dropping and love, that is De La Soul.
Favorite tracks: "Pain" (feat. Snoop Dogg) and "Nosed Up"
11. Hodgy - Fireplace: TheNotTheOtherSide
You might know Hodgy, formerly known as Hodgy Beats, as one of the original members of the Los Angeles-based hip hop collective Odd Future. Although he isn't as well known as front man Tyler the Creator, Hodgy actually was the first member to drop a solo project, with The Dena Tape in 2009. Two weeks ago, he released his official debut album. The sound deviates from the sound of Odd Future. It's lighter and more uplifting. Salomon Faye, Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne are the only features on the record so you can rightly call it a solo album.
Favorite tracks: "Barbell" and "Dreaminofthinkin"
10. ScHoolboy Q - Blank Face LP
ScHoolboy Q has been an established name in the hip hop scene ever since he released his debut album Setbacks in 2011. Setbacks as well as his two follow-up albums never fully persuaded us. That changed this year when he dropped the Blank Face LP though! We've listened to this record front to back innumerable times ever since it dropped.
Favorite tracks: "THat Part" (feat. Kanye West) and "JoHn Muir"
9. Gold Panda - Good Luck And Do Your Best
Gold Panda is a British electronic music producer, performer and composer. This year, he released his third full-length studio album. The sound of Good Luck And Do Your Best is very diverse. It ranges from breakbeat and triphop to more ambient and electronic folk (think Bibio). Cool fact is that Gold Panda uses nothing but an Akai MPC2000XL, an old sampler, to make his music.
Favorite tracks: "In My Car" & "Autumn Fall"
