Nas' critically acclaimed debut album "Illmatic" released twenty years ago and is one of the most memorable hip-hop albums to date. One9 and Erik Parker worked a full decade on a documentary film called "NAS: TIME IS ILLMATIC", which now celebrates the album´s twentieth anniversary.
The film chronicles the creation of "Illmatic". Nas returns to his childhood neighborhood in Queensbridge, New York City, which shaped Nas' personality as well as his pioneering album. He talks about his influences (from the music of his jazz musician father Olu Dara to the flourishing hip-hop scene in New York City) and the obstacles he faced before his major label signing at age 19.
The film features interviews with, amongst others, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, DJ Premier, Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys. "Nas: Time is Illmatic" is a must-see for every fan of Nas´s music or hip-hop in general or anyone who's interested in an insight in New York street life in the crack-infested 80's and gentrifying 90's.
