It's December. Next to buying presents, decorating christmas trees, eating and drinking way too much and hanging out with relatives you don't particularly like, this also means it's time for end-of-the-year-lists! We at whatsgood. don't want to fall behind and we like having heated debates about this shit so we present our WHATSGOOD. TOP 15 OF '15 list. The idea is very simple: our 15 favorite music releases of 2015. These can be either EP's or full-length albums.
We start the countdown with no. 15 until 11:
15. Tuxedo - Tuxedo
For his new project, Mayer Hawthorne teamed up with hip-hop producer Jake One to make an 80's inspired disco/funk album that was released on Stones Throw Records in March of this year. As with Hawthorne's previous releases, it's perfect music to vibe to with your girl. We especially like their take on Snoop Dogg's classic "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Get None)".
Favorite tracks: "Do It" & "Number One"
14. Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment - Surf
We were very excited when we heard Chance The Rapper was dropping an album this year. As it turned out, it wasn't a solo project but a release of Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment (of which Chance is a member). It therefore sounds nothing like Chance's "Acid Rap" tape. If it did, it would've most likely ended up in our top 5. It's still very much worth the listen though! The "Experiment" part in the name of the group makes total sense. The album is a mixture of jazz, funk, soul, r&b, hip-hop, world music and pretty much every other genre imaginable!
Favorite tracks: "Wanna Be Cool" & "Sunday Candy"
13. Deux Deux - Imperium
Deux Deux is a side-project of Amsterdam-based Zwart Licht producer Hayzee (check out the webisode we did on him here) and Nijmegen-based Zo Moeilijk MC Roscovitsch. The duo released their debut EP "Imperium" in collaboration with Patta. Hayzee accurately describes his sound as the organic feel of hip-hop combined with the electronic feel of grime and it perfectly suits Rosco's suave voice and laidback flow.
Favorite tracks: "Hoor" & "Balotelli"
12. MED, Blu & Madlib - Bad Neighbor
Madlib is one of our favorite producers of all time and Blu has been one of our favorite upcoming rappers of the last couple of years. So when we found out they teamed up together with Medaphoar, better known now as MED, to make a full-length album we were very excited. Especially 'cause MF DOOM has a feature on it. "Bad Neighbors" might not survive the test of time and become a classic, like so many of Madlib's previous projects, but it's still pretty damn good!
Favorite tracks: "Knock Knock" & "Burgundy Whip"
11. Jamie XX - In Colour
Jamie XX's "In Colour" is exactly that - colourful and melodic. Although almost every track comes in from a different angle, it does sound like a coherent record. It might not be exactly what we're used to from Jamie XX - although the signature steel drums are ever so present on "Obvs" and "Sleep Sound" features his distinctive breakbeat drums - it's still a quality release. Perfect music for a summer night, a lazy Sunday on the couch or when you just feel like spacing out to a sonic work of art. At times even a little reminiscent of Flying Lotus.
Favorite tracks: "Sleep Sound" & "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)"
